The Royal Society Of Edinburgh
Scotland's National Academy honours and encourages outstanding achievement. But paying tribute to the best minds in Scotland is only part of the Royal Society of Edinburgh's wide-ranging mission.
Founded in 1783 for the "advancement of learning and useful knowledge", the Royal Society of Edinburgh was born out of the intellectual ferment of the Scottish Enlightenment. Today, it is Scotland's National Academy of Science and Letters and one of the oldest National Academies in the world. With its 1200 Fellows drawn from all fields of learning, it has an ability to draw on wide ranging expertise which makes it unique amongst learned societies in the United Kingdom.
As well as providing independent, expert advice to key decisionmaking bodies and policy makers and providing a forum for informed debate, the Society's Research Awards programme grants well over half a million pounds a year to exceptionally talented young academics and potential entrepreneurs.
